Introducing our newest terrific event, the first annual Breakdown Girls’ Invitational on Dec. 9, 2017 at Minnetonka

Combined with our boys’ Tip Off Classic at Hopkins, the Breakdown features 33 games of elite Minnesota high school basketball action on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017

CLEAR LAKE, Minn. (Nov. 27, 2017) – For the last 14 years, BREAKDOWN SPORTS has brought high school basketball fans across Minnesota the best teams and match-ups at our annual Tip Off Classics. This year, we’re expanding our offerings in early December to include the first annual Breakdown Girls’ Invitational at Minnetonka High School on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017. In conjunction with the boys’ Tip Off Classic at Hopkins that same day, we’ll be hosting 66 teams and 33 games in a “Basketball Day Minnesota” showcase.

The two events will feature 49 preseason top-15 ranked teams (boys and girls), five defending state champions (Orono in girls’ Class 3A, Apple Valley in boys’ Class 4A, DeLaSalle in boys’ Class 3A, Minnehaha Academy in boys’ Class 2A, and Minneapolis North in boys’ Class 1A), 24 defending state tournament teams, and over 200 college prospects. We expect more than 10,000 high school basketball fans to descend upon the western suburbs for the two events.

The lineup at the first annual Breakdown Girls’ Invitation includes defending state champion Orono, as well as 18 other top-15 preseason ranked teams and a terrific showdown in Class 3A between No. 2 DeLaSalle and No. 3 Robbinsdale Cooper. The top two ranked teams in Class 4A are also in action (Hopkins and Minnetonka).

The boys’ Tip Off Classic will also be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017 at Hopkins High School’s Lindbergh Center. We’re featuring 17 boys’ games with 30 teams ranked in our preseason top-15 poll, including 13 of the top 15 in Class 4A, seven of the top nine in Class 3A, and six of the top seven in Class 2A. That number includes all four No. 1-ranked teams in Apple Valley in 4A, DeLaSalle in 3A, Minnehaha Academy in 2A, and Springfield in 1A.

In each of the past FIVE seasons, a Breakdown event has featured a match-up of the eventual Class 4A state championship game, including last year’s Champlin Park victory over Apple Valley in the Tip Off Classic — a result the Eagles flipped in the state tournament. Could there be a sixth straight title preview game?

The Tip Off Classic began back in January 2004. The BREAKDOWN staff wanted to showcase teams from across the state and provide unique, competitive match-ups that might not otherwise be seen, including top-rated teams with state tournament aspiration squaring off. The experiment worked out so well that now The BREAKDOWN now hosts the No. 1 single-day classic in Minnesota. The Girls’ Invitational is in its first year as a great complement to the Tip Off Classic. We expect it to continue to grow and become one of the premier basketball events in the state, if not the entire country.
