Our own Ryan James will preview each of the four super-powered brackets at our summer-closing Bracket Buster event at Maple Grove Jr. High School this Thursday, July 30. He started with the Class 4A and 3A fields, and continued tonight with the Class 2A field, which features several rising programs that could contend for a state title this winter.
St. Croix Lutheran's Ade Lamu
In 2 Sentences: The Crusaders of St. Croix Lutheran are returning all key pieces from a state tournament team and they play a Fire squad that lost their Northern Iowa signed talent as well as their PG so they are starting a new group. The Crusaders are a strong contender for the state title and a favorite for this event.
Top Match-Ups: Aage Rovney vs Nolan Wright, Ade Lamu vs Spencer Stewart-Hester, Trenton Krueger vs Aaron Nowak
2014-15 Records: St. Croix Lutheran (30-3) vs Holy Family (14-14)
Prediction: The Crusaders will win this game by a big margin as long as all their pieces are there. They have a lot more talent than the Fire at this point who is a team that needs a new chemistry.
In 2 Sentences: This might be the most anticipated game of the weekend because the young talent that is Jenson and Jalen (in middle school last year) as well as freshman returning player Bickham, these guys are the future of Minnesota hoops. Add in some veteran talent and this game will be fantastic.
Top Match-Ups: Jalen Suggs vs Jenson Beachy, Jaden Anderson vs Jake Richardson
2014-15 Records: Minnehaha Academy (19-9) vs Perham (12-15)
Prediction: Who wins? Really tough to know. If all are healthy it will go to the final buzzer and we say Minnehaha will get it because they are a bit older of a team.
Caledonia's Owen King
In 2 Sentences: Different parts of the state who lost key pieces but bring back strong scholarship type talents like Owen King and Noah Gindorff. Two excellent coaches going head to head in a game that people will watch close as new pieces have to play big roles
Top Match-Ups: Caledonia (28-5) vs Crosby-Ironton (22-8)
2014-15 Records: Owen King vs Jack Silgren, Colton Lampert vs Ben Jordan, Gavin Schroeder vs Noah Gindorff
Prediction: The Rangers are deeper up front and should grab this game by five or six points. It will be an excellent game and stopping Owen King will be tough but the game should be excellent.
St. Paul Academy's Dalante Peyton
In 2 Sentences: These are two of the three or four squads that will be picked to be number one in a wide open but talented Class AA. Braham is incredibly deep and likely have the deepest talent pool in Class A while SPA has one of the best combos in AA in Peyton and Hanson. This will be an incredible game.
Top Match-Ups: Dalante Peyton vs Chris Olson, Kent Hanson vs Connor Tschumper, Emerson Egly vs John Larson/Ryan Larson
2014-15 Records: St. Paul Academy (19-10) vs Braham (25-3)
Prediction: Picking a winner. Both teams have brand new coaches so whichever team looks to their floor leaders could have an edge. Braham is deeper and had a better year last year, we pick them in overtime by a free throw.
