Our own Ryan James will preview each of the four super-powered brackets at our summer-closing Bracket Buster event at Maple Grove Jr. High School this Thursday, July 30. He started with the Class 4A field, and continued today with the Class 3A field, which includes eight terrific teams angling for summer supremacy.
Kasson-Mantorville's Braxton Raymond
In 2 Sentences: Waconia had one of the most difficult schedules in the state last year and that allowed them to make the state push in March. The Wildcats bring back their backcourt but have pieces to replace up front while the Komets have three of their top five guys back led by leading scorer Braxton Raymond.
Top Match-Ups: Brendan Knoll vs Josh Rands, Braxton Raymond vs Joey Kortuem, Cole Kremer vs Jordan Notch
2014-15 Records: Waconia (18-14) vs Kasson-Mantorville (15-13)
Prediction: Kasson-Mantorville has the game’s top player in Raymond, Waconia will be bigger and deeper, while Waconia has the backcourt experience edge. Game should be close but games go as the guards go and Waconia’s have a ton experience, they win by four.
In 2 Sentences: People will look past the Pioneers but they aren’t going anywhere as they bring back two starters who are their second and third leading scorers. They are on their way up as are the Patriots who have been playing together all Grassroots season in top events so they have their chemistry.
Top Match-Ups: Sam Carlson vs Savion Scott, Simeon Davis vs Demetrius Edwards-Brown, Chris Moore vs Julian Jackson
2014-15 Records: Mpls Henry (14-14) vs Hill-Murray (21-8)
Prediction: You have to go with the Patriots for the simple fact that the they have been playing together basically since mid-November as Henry played together as a high school team and spring/summer team with a full roster. The Pioneers are also playing their first games without Marshawn Wilson. Patriots by six.
Mankato West's Jake Dale
In 2 Sentences: Both teams bring back a top talent as well as solid role players. West had more success last year and brings back more top guys but Fridley has a bit more potential for success. Both should have excellent winters.
Top Match-Ups: Jake Dale vs Teathloach Pal, Jake Makela vs Nate Sheferaw, Hunter Freiricks vs Shyheem Murray
2014-15 Records: Mankato West (20-8) vs Fridley (18-8)
Prediction: West has more experience winning with the roster they will have and my thought is that will give them a one score win. Fridley has more athletes and has the potential to be better but West should be better this weekend.
Delano's Matt Kreklow
In 2 Sentences: East lost a strong senior backcourt but the transfer of Krisean Coffee from Illinois to Mankato and the young talent of Ayers and Hayes, the East Cougars aren’t likely to have a drop off and may be better this year. Delano will also be better now that their youth talent is ready to win games and all of their players are healthy.
Top Match-Ups: CJ Ayers vs Nick Cayler, D’mani Hayes vs Calvin Wishart, Krisean Coffee vs Matt Kreklow
2014-15 Records: Mankato East (21-11) vs Delano (14-14)
Prediction: This is a game that is very close to call. Coffee hasn’t played with this team yet and we don’t even know if he’s fully moved here yet but if he is there, Delano will have a tough time with him. Delano will have the better front line, East the better athletes. Close game, we like Delano because there is more certainty there.
