The Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association today released its annual awards for both coaching and All-Academic performers for the 2009-10 boys' basketball season.

One coach in each of the four classes was selected as the coach of the year (there was a tie in Class A), while each of the 32 sections in the state also had a coach of the year chosen from among its ranks.

Class AAAA
David Flom, Eden Prairie

Flom guided the Eagles to a 26-5 season and a fourth-place finish in the Class AAAA state tournament.  During the regular season, Eden Prairie won the final Lake Conference title with a 19-3 record, finishing ahead of Apple Valley.

Class AAA
Dan Elhard, Grand Rapids

The Thunderhawks rode Elhard's guidance all the way to the state championship game, where they gave unbeaten St. Paul Johnson a terrific run before finally falling shy.  Grand Rapids finished 28-3, the finest season in school history.

Class AA
Matt Urbanek, Jordan

Urbanek returned Jordan to the state tournament, where the Hubmen were knocked out by Plainview-Elgin-Millville in the quarterfinals of Class AA.  But with a 23-6 record, Jordan was a contending club under Urbanek's leadership.

Class A
Jon Lillquist, Sebeka
Gary Nelson, MACCRAY

Class A recognized co-coaches of the year in Lillquist and Nelson, two outstanding coaches from the smaller schools.  Lillquist guided the Trojans all the way to the Class A state title game before they finally were downed by powerful Minnesota Transitions.  Sebeka had a terrific balanced attack under Lillquist, helping the team to a 30-3 record and a perfect Park Region season.  Nelson was behind the bench as MACCRAY won its first 28 games of the season before running into Ellsworth in the Section 3A tournament.  The Wolverines may not have made it to state, but enjoyed a terrific 15-0 season in the Camden Conference.
