The Hill-Murray/Patrick Henry 9:30 am tip had a bad wrinkle to it as Pioneer start senior guard Marshawn Wilson didn’t make the trip because he was in the hospital with a seriously high temperature.  This helped balance things out for a tired Henry squad who came into the game less than 12 hours after losing a double overtime contest to Washburn.

The Pioneers opened the game with three triples from three different players.  They couldn’t score against the Henry shot blockers around the rim but Simeon Davis was able to create opportunity for teammates with his ability to penetrate and kick.  On the other end the Patriots simply couldn’t get a good shot up to the rim.  Turnovers, early jumpers, contested shots around the rim, all of it contributed to early struggles.  Every Pioneer player scored early to give Hill-Murray an 11-4 advantage.

Henry closed the gap to 23-18 on the efforts of Jermal Davis and Jacarius Ford.   Jacarius hit a trey and scored on the break while Davis was your every day active scorer producing in transition and a putback. That said, every time the Pioneers looked to counter for success Jack Fahey hit a jumper.  The senior scored three first half treys that were the only item helping Hill-Murray hold on with Wilson not in the gym.

The Jacarius Ford explosion gave Henry the lead late in the first half.  He ran the floor for an attacking score against the Pioneer retreat, hit a pull-up three in transition, and then sent an alley-oop Jermal Davis in transition and the Patroit lead was 31-28.  Deamonte Edwards-Brown gave Henry a 36-35 lead with a triple at the buzzer.

Edwards-Brown (also known for short as “DEB” and Ford continually wore on the Pioneer defense both in transition and in the half court set.  Both found their way to the rim the longer the game wore on tired legs.  “DEB” hit a three that gave the Patriots the lead but then Fahey knocked out yet another triple as he was having one of the best three-point shooting  games of his career.  In the second half Jack started attacking the rim to complete plays.

Edwards-Brown was the scoring catalyst for his team but Ramaa Hudnell had back to back late game scores including a trey off a ball reversal.  Henry needed them too as Simeon Davis attacked the rim to score twice against a Henry defense that didn’t stop ball or rotate.  Davis took contact both times to score and then Fahey hit his sixth triple of the game tying the score at 66.

Down the stretch it was a foul shooting contest.  Ford attacked into space, was fouled, and made both for his team.   Fahey went back the other way, attacked, was fouled, made one of two.  Scored was coincidently Patriots up 68-67.  Stephen Kennedy was fouled and hit for Henry and the lead was 70-67.  Ford hit more foul shots and it was a 72-69 game but Davis knocked out a game winning trey with some contact and the game went to extra time tied at 72.

The overtime session started with Julian Jackson scoring on a turn around out of the post and then Hill-Murray was called for an illegal screen on the other end.  Patrick Henry then played keep away for a minute before getting attacking points from both “DEB” and Ford open the gap to 81-75.  Simeon Davis did his best by attacking for three overtime scores and after Kennedy missed two foul shots Fahey quickly scored and it was 81-79 with 34 ticks remaining.  After free throw mishaps from both ends, Simeon Davis hit a second game winner just before the buzzer.  The shot was behind the arc and Hill-Murray won 83-82 in a classic opener.
