Controlled effort leads Iowa power past three-time Class AAA champs

North Scott played a controlled game from the beginning while DeLaSalle’s first six or seven possessions had a lot of one or no pass jumpshots that clanged off more often than not.  North Dakota bound Cortez Seals scored within the flow early and often resulting in Dave Thorson taking a timeout down 12-5.

After that timeout the Islander play completely changed, it had a new energy. Defensively they forced a couple five second violations and the wing pair of Sacar Anim and Josh Collins slashed their way to space and scores after several passes.  Collins, also a North Dakota signed senior, hit a pair of treys giving the Islanders the lead at 25-24.

The Marlon Stewart/Cortez Seales scoring combo re-focused just before the half combing to score four times late including a bank shot at the buzzer for a 35-29 halftime lead.  North Scott continued that momentum in the second half scoring the first seven points out of the break.  Seales and Stewart each had bulling attacks to the rim and when they missed, Rickey Grimes was there to clean up the mess with a putback.  In very similar fashion to the first half when Thorson had to take an early timeout, DeLaSalle had to reorganize again down 42-29.

As was the case in the first 18 (minutes), DeLaSalle battled back from the early half deficit.  Josh Collins hit a three and Sacar Anim went off scoring in just about every way. The Islander senior hit two treys, two pull-ups, and two slashing scores.  The last of which made the score 56-54 with five minutes to go.

Down the stretch Stewart and Seales did just enough to keep their team ahead.  Stewart knocked out foul shots in the final minute and Seales spun his way into space twice building a 65-59 lead with 25 seconds to go.  DeLaSalle had late chances but a turnover and miss from Jarvis went the other way to score.

Johnson made up for that with a floater at the 19 second mark.  After the basket went through Thorson called a timeout down 65-61.  Stewart made a foul shot but the Islanders failed to control the ball after the fouls hot miss and two more Stewart foul shots put the game away.  Collins made it interesting hitting his fourth trey of the game with two seconds to go but it was too late as North Scott won 67-64.

Seales and Stewart combined to score 51 of his team’s 67 points led by 30 from Seales who also collected a dozen boards.  Anim led DeLaSalle with 21 points, Collins had 17, and Johnson scored 16.
