Tip Off Classic recap: Dover-Eyota outruns Pelican Rapids 89-59

Pelican Rapids coach Brian Korf said before the game, “This is our first game. What is it, their third?"

That proved to be prophetic as his Vikings had a tough time getting untracked early.  Dover-Eyota scored 55 first half points en route to a 89-59 rout of the Vikings in our second game on the west court at Hopkins Lindbergh Center. 

Northstar Girls Hoops has the Eagles rated #1AA but they dropped to #7 in the AP poll after losing to Class AAA Kasson-Mantorville last week, and Dover-Eyota successfully delivered the message that they belong in the conversation about an eventual state Class AA champion.

With a big height advantage over the Vikings, they also showed that they could get up and down the floor with—and even ahead of—Pelican Rapids, and that they can shoot threes with anybody. They made 5-of-6 threes and 23-of-35 shots en route to a 55-32 halftime lead. The Eagles had 8 first half turnovers to 7 for the Vikings. Danielle Higgins had 15 first-half points to lead the Eagles.

But they also dominated inside, blocking a half dozen of the Vikings shots in the first five minutes of the second half.

The two teams continued to go baseline to baseline in the second half, but the two played more evenly now that it was more a matter of nobody getting hurt. Dover-Eyota outscored Pelican Rapids 34-27 for the 89-59 final.

Madison Nelson led the Eagles with 23 points, Brandi Blattner scored 21 and Higgins finished with 18. Mackenzie Korf led the Vikings with 14.
