The Breakdown

Team Name: Hopkins Royals
Head Coach: Ken Novak Jr., 24th year
Current Record: 12-2 (Through Jan. 28)
Ranked: No. 3 among 4A schools by Minnesota Basketball News
Notes: After a loss to Tartan where the Royals were uncharacteristically out of sorts they’ve played well winning eight in a row.  The Royals started Lake Conference play this week having won 11 of their 12 games by well over double figures which includes an average differential of 19 points a showing.  The competition is now stiffer coming down the stretch but Coach Ken Novak Jr. will have his team ready.
Leading the way for the Royals is junior Jake Wright.  Jake is not only the team’s leading scorer at 17.8 points a game but he’s also the best shooter in blue and white and one of the most improved players in the state.  Wright can’t be left alone because he will bury with his high arcing trey but he’s also improved his conditioning allowing him to attack off the dribble.
Seniors Nick Johnson (9.3 ppg) and Jamal Davis (12.2 ppg) provide versatility and size on the wing, junior Kamali Chambers (11.1 ppg) is the ball hounding defensive menace, and freshman Amir Coffey (8.7 ppg) is the next Royal star in the making.  The team is deep (seniors Melvin Martin, Phillip Stibling, and Eric Hedstrom as well as juniors Treyvon Edwards and Stephon Sharp also contribute) and well coached.
