Tip Off Classic preview: Chaska vs. NRHEG

By Breakdown Staff, 11/27/12, 6:30PM CST

1:15 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 at Hopkins Lindbergh Main Court

This showdown between powerful teams is likely the most intriguing matchup of the day. No. 2AA NRHEG comes into the year off a perfect regular season last year and a third-place finish in state.

The Panthers are led by arguably the best player in the state in Carlie Wagner, who set the state tournament scoring record last year.

Chaska garnered our No. 3AAA pre-season ranking, but had somewhat of a disappointing season last year. They welcome back McKena Panning from injury and welcome in Angie Wenning as a transfer, which should help them at the guard position. The Hawks are led by South Dakota State recruit Ellie Thompson inside.

Key Matchup

Chaska’s posts vs. Carlie Wagner
While they won’t be going head to head in this game, these two entities are what make their respective teams go. Chaska has the definite advantage inside, but can Thompson and Baab make up for all the points Wagner will inevitably score?

Why Chaska will win:
  • No one on NRHEG will be able to match the size and strength of Ellie Thompson. She will score 25-30 points to lead Chaska to victory.
  • The Hawks’ depth will wear down NRHEG.

Why NRHEG will win:

  • Carlie Wagner is the best player on the floor and has a chance to score upwards of 40 points every night out.
  • The Panthers frustrate Chaska’s post with a ton of help or zone defense and clean up the defensive boards.

Our Prediction: Chaska
