The 5th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Classic showcases the best of northeastern Minnesota…and more…

The one-day, seven-game showcase at Duluth East High School features some of the top boys’ basketball programs in the region

DULUTH, Minn. (Jan. 11, 2018) – For the fifth consecutive year, BREAKDOWN SPORTS brings together some of northeast Minnesota’s top high school basketball teams for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Classic. The one-day showcase at Duluth East High School on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 features seven games between top teams from northeastern Minnesota going head-to-head, as well as a few interlopers from other parts of the state.

We’ve pulled together a terrific lineup that is highlighted by a potential state championship battle in Class 1A between top-ranked North Woods and No. 3-ranked Nevis at 1:15 p.m. The Grizzlies finished as the runner-up to Minneapolis North in last year’s state title game and are unbeaten on the season, winning by no less than 14 points through nine games. Tate Olson and Cade Goggleye both average more than 20 points per game for the high-flying Grizzlies, while Nevis has a balanced attack paced by Michael Landquist and Thomas Wormley. The Tigers are also unbeaten and have limited six of eight opponents to fewer than 40 points.

In total, the fifth annual MLK Jr. Classic features five top-20 boys’ in their respective classes. In addition to No. 1-1A North Woods and No. 3-1A Nevis, we’re proud to host No. 8-1A Hinckley-Finlayson against Superior (WI), and a ranked match-up between No. 6-2A Brooklyn Center and No. 10-2A Esko. We also have St. Cloud Apollo versus Hermantown, Chisago Lakes against Cloquet, Anoka versus Grand Rapids, and host Duluth East taking on Hibbing.

For those not able to attend the games in person, Baller.tv will be webcasting the entire event on their website at https://www.baller.tv/breakdown-mlk-classic

In addition to the full slate of varsity games, we’re also hosting seven junior varsity and freshman-level games during the day.
