Dec. 3: Sexe's 1000th leads East Ridge past Park Center

Note: photo galleries coming soon

Main Court

Centennial 64, Alexandria 44

Centennial’s perimeter defense, spearheaded by Claire Orth, was a little too quick and shut down Alexandria’s blue chip guards Macy Hatlestad and Kendall Kohler most of the way en route to a convincing 64-44 win.

Hatlestad and Kohler combined for just 5 1st half points as Centennial pulled out to a 30-17 halftime lead.

In the second half, Orth also broke loose on offense in the 2nd half for 11 points, mostly in transition but also including a dagger three that made it 48-29 around the 10-minute mark. Sara Stapleton scored 6 points in each half and was a force on the boards for the Cougars. Hatlestad scored 10 second half points, but all but one of her second half buckets came after the ten minute mark. Kayla Feldhake gave up 4 inches to Stapleton but scored 10 points, mostly in the lane.

Anoka 68, Sauk Centre 64

Abby Slater was 0-for the second half but, as coach Zach Vogelsberg said, “Shooters shoot. We tell her to just keep shooting.” And that’s what she did, draining a 3-pointer at 1:11 to give Anoka a 64-61 lead over Sauk Centre, and the Tornadoes made just enough free throws (4-of-7) to hang on to a hard-fought 68-64 win.

Anoka looked to be in charge at times with a big size advantage inside. Sauk did a good job of doubling down on Brittany Bongartz but Anoka’s 6-2 senior post still overpowered her opponents for 21 points. Maesyn Thiesen answered for Sauk with 22 points including 5 3-pointers. Her 3 3-pointers brought the Mainstreeters back from a 9-point halftime deficit to 43-all at 12:05. It was tied at 55, 57, 59 and 61 when Slater hit her difference-maker from the right corner.

Anoka’s 5-4 freshman point guard did a great job running the Anoka offense and scored 6 points. Sauk forwards Jill Klaphake and Tori Peschel gave up four to six inches inside but kept things from getting out of hand on the boards.

Elk River 61, Lakeville North 47

It was a case of too much Gabi Haack as Elk River topped Lakeville North 61-47 in Game #3 on the Main Court at the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic. Haack scored 28 points including five 3-pointers in the first half, which ended with the Elks up 33-23 and the Panthers having to abandon their preferred zone defense.

North got within 51-46 at 2:38 and, sure enough, Haack hit a pair of throws, then 2 on a pretty dribble drive through almost the entire Lakeville defense, it seemed. Elk River made 4-of-6 throws the rest of the way for the final score.

Ava Kramer and Kelsie Cox also attacked the rim for the Elks, as did Temi Carda for the Panthers. Caitlyn Peterson played well for Lakeville as well, scoring mostly from long range. But in addition to her 28 points, Haack also dominated the defensive boards for the Elks.

Hopkins 78, Kasson-Mantorville 30

Kasson-Mantorville, the Hiawatha Valley League power, hung with Hopkins for the first few minutes before the Royals laid a 36-0 run on the KoMets to put an end to all the drama. The final was 78-30.

Freshman Paige Bueckers was spectacular in limited minutes, finishing with 27 points and (unofficially) 8 steals. Hopkins subbed liberally after the early blitz and got scoring from a variety of players, including seventh-grader Amaya Battle with 5.

Kristin Scott, the Iowa State recruit, was limited to just 12 points as the Hopkins guards made even the simplest of passes difficult.

East Court

Andover 63, New Prague 62

Andover star Jolene Daninger nabbed a steal in the closing seconds and fed teammate Amanda Dagostino for an easy go-ahead basket in a 63-62 victory over New Prague to kickoff action at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic Saturday morning.

The first game of the day featured a back-and-forth affair that went down to the wire. New Prague appeared to be in the driver's seat after freshman Emily Russo's athletic layup put them ahead by one and they got a stop on the other end, but Daninger's clutch steal turned the tables.

Mariah Sexe scored her 1,000th career point and scored a game-high 15 points to lead East Ridge to a 55-51 victory over Park Center, which is ranked #2 in the latest Northstar Girls Hoops poll.

The Raptors used a strong rotation of posts to dominate the paint. Sexe, Kelen Kenol and Meaghan Rapp combined for 29 points in the low-scoring, defensive battle.

Sommer Blakemore scored 7 of her team-high 12 points in the final minutes, but Tomes hit free throws to seal it.

Second-ranked Mountain Iron-Buhl turned the tables on #1 Goodhue in a big way to knock the defending state champion off its pedestal in emphatic fashion. MIB connected on 15 treys to earn a 78-34 victory that was in running time for the final six minutes.

Mary Burke and Chelsea Mason combined for 41 and eight triples to lead the way, but five Rangers connected on at least two from distance.

Goodhue led 3-0, but then MIB rolled off 21 straight points and never took its foot off the pedal the rest of the way.

Prior Lake 79, Moorhead 78

It wasn’t the shot they wanted, but Sydney Yotter drained a 3 at the final buzzer to bring Prior Lake from the brink of a tough loss to a hard-fought 79-78 win over Moorhead. Prior Lake led 52-47 at 14:30 when Moorhead went on a 19-4 run to lead 78-76 at the 15-second mark. Unfortunately the Spuds only made 5-of-12 free throws inside of 4 minutes or their lead might have been safe.

There wasn't a lot of defense played here other than the hand in the passing lane. Riley Wheatcraft burned Moorhead for 32 points inside and out, while McKenna Hofschild added 17. Sam Haiby was everywhere for the Spuds with 30 points, while Brooke Tonsfeldt added 28, 20 of them in the first half.

White Bear Lake 64, Champlin Park 51

Champlin Park ran out to an 18-8 lead on White Bear Lake, and Bears coach Jeremy Post was worried. “We got beat up our last two games,” he said, “and we weren’t playing confident.” So, over the next 9 minutes through the end of the first half, they shot 8-of-16 including six 3-pointers, two of them by freshman guard Ella Janicki. They took the lead one of Janicki’s 3s, then took the lead for good on an Adri Perron 2, and led 34-28 at the half.

The Bears quickly took an 11-point lead to open the second half, but Champlin fought back to within 41-40 when Alexa Molin converted an old-fashioned 2+1 and Jordan Ferrand hit a pair of buckets. The final was 64-51 White Bear, as the Bears hit 8-of-22 3s.

Perron led the Bears with 17, while Jordan Ferrand scored 15 and Janicki 13. Erica Hicks led Champlin with 18 including 3-of-6 3s. Allison Gerads added 13 and Gabby Mocchi 10, and a strong game on the boards.

Northfield 59, Byron 51

Northfield overcame a huge game from Byron junior Yokie Lee to claim an important 59-51 victory Saturday evening. The Section 1 rivals figure to be jockeying for seeding position all year, along with Winona and Kasson-Mantorville.

Lee finished with 27 points, 16 boards and 7 blocks, unofficially, but the Raiders started sandwiching her even when she didn't have the ball in the second half after the 6-5 junior went 23-11 in the opening stanza.

Grace Touchette took over in the second half, finishing with 16 points and a handful of steals, but a balanced attack paved the way for the win.

Apple Valley 68, St. Michael-Albertville 47

That is not a typo. And now, on top of everything else, Apple Valley coach Jeremy Gordon has to worry about his team peaking too soon. The Eagles were in March form in soundly defeating St. Michael-Albertville 68-47. They did it with a versatile offense that scored inside, outside and in between.

Sara Teske scored 21 points, mostly in transition—and just in case anyone was wondering if she was back from her injury, tonight was your answer. Lyndsey Robson added 14 from 2 and 3-point range. Brynne Rolland added 11 on some great inlet passes and post moves, and on put-backs. Sophomore Mykal Parham, no longer the best kept secret, came off the bench to score 8 with 17 rebounds, and some put-backs of her own. Erin Baxter added 7 before being leveled after a made 3-point shot (no call), and limping off the court.

It was an almost perfect performance. Each team took 55 shots. Apple Valley made 28, St. Michael 15. The rebounds were 60-23 Apple Valley.

Eastview 74, Minnetonka 48

If you had told me that Allie Pickrain would not score for Eastview in the first half, I’d say, Minnetonka has a shot. Now, if you added that she had 8 assists, well, that’s a different story. In fact, the Lightning roared out to 10-1 and 31-11 leads en route to a 43-19 halftime lead. Rachel Ranke hit 4 3s and 14 points and Megan Walstad had 4 2-pointers for 8 points.

Tonka got the Eastview lead below 20 in the 2nd half but Eastview pushed back to 63-39, then emptied the bench. Pickrain ended up leading all scorers with 17 points, all in the 2nd half. Ranke had 14, all in the 1st. Macy Guebert had 11, all in the 1st. Megan Walker led Tonka with 16, 15 of them in the 2nd half.
