The Breakdown Sports Granite City Classic brings together 14 top boys’ hoops teams over the holidays

The scripted two-day showcase at St. Cloud Apollo and St. Cloud State features highly-anticipated games 

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (Sept. 19, 2016) – High school basketball fans seeking a post-holiday treat need look no further than the BREAKDOWN SPORTS Granite City Classic. The scripted two-day showcase at St. Cloud State University and St. Cloud Apollo High School on Dec. 29-30, 2016 features 14 games between top teams from around the state of Minnesota, as well as a visitor from Madison East, Wisc.

We’ve pulled together a terrific lineup that is highlighted by our Dec. 30 event-closing game between state tournament regulars Maple Grove and Apple Valley at 8:30 p.m. at St. Cloud Apollo. That game features two of the state's best point guards going head-to-head in the Crimson's Brad Davison and Apple Valley's Tre Jones.

But that isn’t the only impressive matchup on tap at the GCC. We also have Champlin Park with D1 commits Theo John and McKinley Wright facing Woodbury and its outstanding backcourt of Jeremiah Codden, Michael Jones, and Jake West on the 29th; and taking on Madison East on the 30th. Apple Valley also gets Madison East on the 29th, while Maple Grove plays Lakeville South and its dynamic duo of junior forward Shae Mitchell and senior guard Jack Sorenson on the 29th. 

Other top teams at the GCC include: Sartell-St. Stephen and its senior-laden lineup with Chris Belling, Eric Markman, and Ethan Stark; Princeton, led by rising sophomore guard James Flicek; a new-look St. Cloud Apollo program with coach Enoch Dix; Monticello's sharp-shooting Matt Todd and the Magic; Rocori's inside game anchored by seniors Connor Schoborg and Derek Thompson; St. Cloud Tech and its back court of All-CLCers Trevor Koenig and Breyvn Spann-Ford; Delano and hot-shooting Calvin Wishart; and Colton Codute and the reloading Orono program.

The BREAKDOWN took over the sponsorship of the original Granite City Classic tournament a few years ago and seeks to match teams from the St. Cloud area against other state powers for all to enjoy. The tournament is annually held at the end of December.
