Dec. 12: Shakopee outscores Rochester JM in nightcap

Edina 66, Lakeville South 64

After an early deficit of more than 10, the Lakeville South Cougars rallied and took a 29-27 lead at half. Cougar sophomore Shea Mitchell logged 13 points at half, including a monster dunk in the final minute; Will Moreton countered him with 13 at the break for Edina. Neck and neck in the second half, a 56-56 tie was the mark with 30 seconds left. A Jack Sorenson 3-pointer did not go, and Edina tries a full-court lob. The receiver falls down, South can’t get the ball in time, and we go to overtime.

Each team scores six in the four-minute extra time, and it’s Lakeville Ball with 2.2 seconds left after a Moreton airball. A Blake Walcholz inbounds pass hits the ceiling, and Edina takes it under its basket. Anders Nelson airballs a corner shot, and he head to another OT.

After the teams trade baskets, a good amount of stalling commences. Wacholz eventually fouls Walt McGrory, and the Hornets point guard makes both free throws. Hutchinson misses a 3, and Edina gets the 66-64 double OT win. Will Moreton led Edina with 27 points.

Osseo 56, Eden Prairie 52

Osseo comes out without much size, but they take a commanding first-half lead regardless with a 31-18 advantage. Eden Prairie came out of the break with a vengeance, tearing off a 16-5 run with much frustration for Osseo. But the Orioles responded, and a big 3-point play from Allen Anderson with two minutes left seemed to be the killer for EP. But a torrent of points -- including a big 3 from Owen Chose -- brought EP within six points with 45 seconds left. It was not enough, however, and Osseo earned a 56-52 win. John Bezdicek and Kameron Bettie each had 13 for Osseo, and Brady Rudrud logged 14 for EP.

Northfield 89, Minnehaha 81

In a game that turned quite scrappy towards the end, Northfield was primed to build a double-digit lead and cruise. Junior forward Hunter Koep poured in 14 in the first half, getting high-percentage makes, and helping Northfield to a 40-24 halftime lead. But in the second, Minnehaha’s young players hustled and absolutely tortured Northfield’s backcourt. They trapped them all over and forced a gang of turnovers, enough to trim the deficit to six. As the free throw game commenced, however, Northfield made just enough to seal the deal, 89-81. Javonni Bickham had 31 and Koep and 27.

Kasson turned it on later in the half, as their point guard Knoll got to the foul line several times and Braxton Raymond (11 pts) worked off the glass, but they were still down 38-32 at the break. BSM turned up the heat in the second and eventually drifted away, 74-60. K-M’s Raymond led all scorers with 30 points, and Cave led BSM with 24. Shakopee 94, Rochester JM 86

In a great team display, Shakopee took a 54-41 halftime lead with the help of 20 first-half points from senior Booker Coplin — he did a ton of damage off backdoor cuts and simple, effective drives. Things totally flipped after halftime, as JM went on a 15-4 run that got them within two points of the lead. Coach Bruce Kugath called a timeout, got his players composed, and sent them back out with a new outlook. The game stayed pretty tight until the final five or so minutes, where Shakopee pulled away to seal a 94-86 win.
