Dec. 5: Coffey's 32 leads Hopkins over Hoover

Madison East 84, Minnetonka 73

As the first boys’ installment of today’s action, Madison East ran out on Tonka early, amassing a 23-8 lead in the game’s first 10 minutes. Sophomore prospect Keshawn Justice, who already holds a D1 offer from UW-Milwaukee, hit several shots from deep early to get East going. Coach Chris Carr looked frustrated as Tonka jump-started their offense, but not without continuing to let East shoot at a high clip. Halftime score was 41-24, with Justice scoring 13 points to lead all players.

Tonka came out with a renewed focus and went on a 18-5 run to start the second half to get within four, 46-42. East saw the threat and kept the intensity high, building back a double-digit lead and riding it out. Justice (24 points) and Deang (19) led the way for Madison, while Miller (27), Cooper (19) and Coatta (17) paced Tonka.

DeLaSalle 56, Milwaukee Washington 48 OT

This game had all the makings of a defensive battle from the beginning. Two disciplined, well-coached teams clashed at the Breakdown Tip-Off in DeLaSalle and Milwaukee Washington, and the 19-16 halftime advantage by Washington reflected that. Goanar Mar was a factor for DeLaSalle, scoring 10 of its 16 first-half points.

Illinois-committed guard Te’Jon Lucas turned up the pace a little in the second half as he and Washington went basket-for-basket with De. Sophomore Gabe Kalscheur lit up from beyond the arc, and the game seemed to be in hand when Goanar Mar gave De a 3-point lead from the free throw line with mere seconds remaining. But Te’Jon Lucas hit a fading 3-pointer from the corner as time expired, and we went into overtime, 44-44.

The teams traded baskets and Kalscheur hit a very difficult and-one with about three defenders draped on him in the post. Up 49-46, DeLaSalle pulls away as Lucas fires away with no success. A Gabe dunk caps a 56-48 De win. Kalscheur ended with 27 points, and Goanar Mar had 17. Lucas had 24 for Washington.

Apple Valley 72, Iowa City West 64

The feature battle of the Girls Tip Off Classic today was Iowa City West versus Apple Valley.  Two defending champions, two favorites to win state titles this season in their respective states, and a boatload of future D1 basketball players.  The game didn’t disappoint.

The match-up of intrigue was Iowa committed Connor McCaffery against five star Eagle guard Gary Trent Jr (both are juniors).  The pair defended one another throughout the game and the final result, a stalemate.  Trent had 27 points, McCaffery 26.  Trent took more shots, McCaffery made more threes, Trent had more working baskets around the rim.

With the two stars canceling one another out for the most part it came down to the rest of the line-up.  Apple Valley had the edge with Brock Bertram swallowing all the rebounds (14), Tre Jones pushing the pace (21 points and half were on the break), and Cameron Kirksey made the game swinging worker players.

The Kirksey plays included a key charge take, a steal leading to a Jones score, and a steal leading to his own two-hand throw down.  Kirksey’s extra effort production occurred when Apple Valley was down two scores and they then took the lead for good winning 72-64.

Hopkins 93, Des Moines Hoover 70

The Hopkins running game was on from the start and after a 17-2 run early the tone of this game was set.  Vinnie Shahid scored a fast eight points with three early steals and then Amir Coffey got into the act with two big throw downs and five transition baskets.  A set up from Shahid to Coffey on the break resulted in a two hand dunk, a wild crowd, a 20 point lead, and a Hoover team that seemed to know their fate early.

The Royals didn’t let up with the lightning paced running game in the second half.  The game was wild and there was some shots flying in all directions, but the Royals were always in control.  Shahid and Coffey pushed the pace giving the Royals regular high percentage shots and then Simon Wright got into the act totaling a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds (Amir had 32 points and 15 rebounds).  Hoover had 17 turnovers and fell 93-70.
