Breakdown Tip Off Classics are the premier high school basketball events in the state – and in the nation

Dozens of top teams and more than two hundred college prospects hit the courts at our girls’ and boys’ Tip Off Classics on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, 2017

CLEAR LAKE, Minn. (Nov. 26, 2017) – For the last 14 years, BREAKDOWN SPORTS has brought high school basketball fans across Minnesota the best teams and match-ups at our annual Tip Off Classics. This year, we've brought together more of the top programs that you've come to expect, with 16 great games on Dec. 2 and 17 terrific games on Dec. 9 — both at Hopkins High School’s Lindbergh Center. It’s sure to be an instant classic — and two days no basketball fan will want to miss.

The girls’ Tip Off Classic begins our schedule on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017 at Hopkins High School’s Lindbergh Center. We’re featuring 12 girls’ games and four boys’ games that include 27 total ranked teams. Two preseason No. 1 teams are in action (Hopkins in Class 4A and Sauk Centre in Class 2A), as well as the defending state champions in Class 2A (Roseau). We feature 11 of the top 15 ranked teams in Class 4A and five of the top six teams in Class 2A.

We also include four boys’ games that match up seven of Minnesota’s best teams, including defending state champions and top-ranked Minnehaha Academy and DeLaSalle, No. 2-3A Orono, No. 2-4A Cretin-Derham Hall, No. 3-4A Hopkins, No. 6-4A East Ridge, and Robbinsdale Armstrong against each other or a powerful Iowa City West program.

That number includes all four No. 1-ranked teams in Apple Valley in 4A, DeLaSalle in 3A, Minnehaha Academy in 2A, and Springfield in 1A.

In each of the past FIVE seasons, a Breakdown event has featured a match-up of the eventual Class 4A state championship game, including last year’s Champlin Park victory over Apple Valley in the Tip Off Classic — a result the Eagles flipped in the state tournament. Could there be a sixth straight title preview game?

The Breakdown girls’ Tip Off Classic features nearly 150 college prospects, including 43 girls and 20 boys with D1 potential. The boys’ Tip Off Classic had 130 college prospects, 37 of whom we believe can play at the D1 level. Over the past 14 years we’ve featured thousands of players who have gone on to play college basketball, and several who now play in the NBA.

The Tip Off Classic began back in January 2004. The BREAKDOWN staff wanted to showcase teams from across the state and provide unique, competitive match-ups that might not otherwise be seen, including top-rated teams with state tournament aspiration squaring off. The experiment worked out so well that now The BREAKDOWN now hosts the No. 1 single-day classic in Minnesota.

BREAKDOWN SPORTS USA and our annual publications are Minnesota's No. 1 resource for players, coaches, fans and sports enthusiasts.  We are a full-service high school sports company, offering season preview publications, in-season premier events, off-season leagues, great photography and an extensive website with news and notes.

We're in our 17th year of covering boys’ and girls’ basketball, 11th in girls’ volleyball and boys’ hockey, 4th in boys’ baseball, and 1st in girls’ softball.  The goal of the BREAKDOWN is simple: We want to offer players, coaches and fans a complete sports resource and experience that they will never forget.
