The Breakdown Sports Tip Off Classics are THE premier high school basketball events in the state

Dozens of top teams and more than two hundred college prospects hit the courts at our girls’ and boys’ Tip Off Classics on Dec. 3 and Dec. 10, 2016

CLEAR LAKE, Minn. (Nov. 21, 2016) – For the last 13 years, BREAKDOWN SPORTS has brought high school basketball fans across Minnesota the best teams and match-ups at our annual Tip Off Classics. This year, we've brought together more of the top programs that you've come to expect, with 16 great games on each Saturday. Our lineup includes the defending girls' state champions in Class 4A (Minnetonka) and Class 1A (Goodhue) and the defending boys' state champions in Class 4A (Hopkins, Class 3A (DeLaSalle) and Class 1A (Minneapolis North).

We also have all four preseason No. 1 boys’ teams competing on at least one weekend (Champlin Park in 4A, DeLaSalle in 3A, Minnehaha Academy in 2A, and Minneapolis North in 1A) and two of the four preseason No. 1 girls’ teams (Hopkins in 4A and Goodhue in 1A), as well as all four of our preseason players of the year (Rochester John Marshall’s Matthew Hurt and Apple Valley’s Tre Jones on the boys’ side and STMA’s Rae Johnson and Kasson-Mantorville’s Kristin Scott on the girls’ side). It’s sure to be an instant classic — and two days no basketball fan will want to miss.

The girls’ Tip Off Classic begins our schedule on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016 at Hopkins High School’s Lindbergh Center. We’re featuring 12 girls’ games and four boys’ games that include 27 total ranked teams. Two preseason No. 1 teams are in action (Hopkins in Class 4A and Goodhue in Class 1A), as well as the defending state champions in two classes (Minnetonka in Class 4A and Goodhue in Class 1A). We feature 14 of the top 15 ranked teams in Class 4A and a great No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in Class A between Goodhue and Mt. Iron-Buhl.

We also include four boys’ games that match up six of Minnesota’s best teams (No. 1-4A Champlin Park, No. 2-4A Hopkins, No. 3-4A Apple Valley, No. 6-4A Rochester John Marshall, No. 1-3A DeLaSalle, and No. 1-1A Minneapolis North) against each other or teams from neighboring Iowa.

The boys’ Tip Off Classic will be held the following Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 at Hopkins High School’s Lindbergh Center. We’re featuring 16 boys’ games with 26 teams ranked in our preseason top-15 poll, including 12 of the top 15 in Class 4A and six of the top seven in Class 3A. That number includes a quartet of No. 1-ranked teams in Champlin Park in 4A, DeLaSalle in 3A, and a great tilt between the top teams in 2A (Minnehaha Academy) and 1A (Minneapolis North).

In each of the past four seasons, a Breakdown event has featured a match-up of the eventual Class 4A state championship game. Could the Rochester John Marshall vs. Hopkins game be that preview? Or perhaps Lakeville North vs. Cretin-Derham Hall? Or Apple Valley vs. Champlin Park? There are so many good match-up to choose from.

The Tip Off Classics feature more than 200 college prospects, including several who have already committed to D1 programs.

The Tip Off Classic began back in January 2004. The BREAKDOWN staff wanted to showcase teams from across the state and provide unique, competitive match-ups that might not otherwise be seen, including top-rated teams with state tournament aspiration squaring off. The experiment worked out so well that now The BREAKDOWN now hosts the No. 1 single-day classic in Minnesota.

BREAKDOWN SPORTS USA and our annual publications are Minnesota's No. 1 resource for players, coaches, fans and sports enthusiasts.  We are a full-service high school sports company, offering season preview publications, in-season premier events, off-season leagues, great photography and an extensive website with news and notes.

We're in our 15th year of covering boys’ and girls’ basketball, 9th in girls’ volleyball and boys’ hockey, and 3rd in boys’ baseball.  The goal of the BREAKDOWN is simple: We want to offer players, coaches and fans a complete sports resource and experience that they will never forget.
