Our own Ryan James will preview each of the four super-powered brackets at our summer-closing Bracket Buster event at Maple Grove Jr. High School this Thursday, July 30. He completes the quartet with the Class 1A preview, which features some great Twin Cities powerhouses and Greater Minnesota small-school talent.
Mpls North's Isaac Johnson
In 2 Sentences: This could be trouble. As good as Nevis was a year ago they lost four senior starters and two from the bench from a state tournament team. Griffin Chase is back but he needs help (watch out for freshman Michael Landquist). Minneapolis North on the other hand has four guys with D1 basketball offers and an entire team returning. Who are the four guys? Tyler Johnson, Jamil Jackson, Isaac Johnson, and Patrick Dembley. Add in the outstanding summer for Jaquan Sanders-Smith and Az Rodgers as well as a solid sophomore in Odell Wilson Jr and what you have is a team with the talent to roll through state (but they have to figure Maranatha in the section final first).
Top Match-Ups: Griffin Chase vs Isaac Johnson, Grant Pappas vs Tyler Johnson, Michael Landquist vs Pat Dembley, Tom Wormley vs Jamil Jackson
2014-15 Records: Mpls North (24-7) vs Nevis (26-4)
Prediction: Nevis has some good young players in Landquist and Wormley and a future college player in Chase but this will be a massive romp. Or at least it should be. North just has way too much talent.
Browerville's Bryce Irsfeld
In 2 Sentences: Maybe the best first round game in terms of depth and strong match-ups at each spot. Bryce Irsfeld is the best in the contest and has some under the radar teammates who can play but the real under the radar guys are Alex Engelhardt and Chase Grinde. These guys put up numbers and win games but because they play in the section with Rushford-Peterson and because they are a smaller school few know who they are at this point. This weekend they can make a name for themselves.
Top Match-Ups: Alex Engelhardt vs Ryan Warwick, Chase Grinde vs Bryce Irsfeld, Brady Schuttemeier vs Trevor Johnson,
2014-15 Records: Spring Grove (24-4) vs Browerville (19-10)
Prediction: Tough call. Both teams are on the upswing. I feel like Bryce can lead his team to the wing but I also feel like Spring Grove has a statement to make and they are more experienced. Tough call so we go Browerville in a point win.
In 2 Sentences: Tanner Vogel scored nearly 20 a game as a freshman last year and he is one of the top players that the state hasn’t seen. But they will see him tomorrow. He is a six foot wing that scores a ton. MTS will counter with their athletic pair Lewis McCaleb and Isaih Wade. Both teams were back end top ten last year and ready to be fixtures this year.
Top Match-Ups: Lewis McCaleb vs Tanner Fink, Isaih Wade vs Tanner Vogel, Curtis Gilliam vs Kale Meendering
2014-15 Records: MTS (23-6) vs Springfield (23-4)
Prediction: MTS has an edge in size with Wade, they have an edge in speed, and finally an edge in experience. The top returning Springfield players are still underclassmen and they are all around six feet while MTS is bigger and has more years under their belt. MTS wins by ten.
Heritage Christian's CJ Woda
In 2 Sentences: Woda and Vander Top are on the radar after nice off-season performances but this will be the state’s best chance to see Winans and Holmes as they travel down to the metro with a purpose: make a name for themselves. MIB is a fast paced run and gun squad entering their prime and ready to make a couple runs at state.
Top Match-Ups: CJ Woda vs Archie Winans, Jake Vander Top vs Josh Isaacson, Tanner Scott vs Jaylon Holmes
2014-15 Records: Heritage Christian (16-12) vs MIB (25-4)
Prediction: Heritage Christian should be not overlooked, this will be a solid game. That said, MIB has a point to prove and they have been playing together for a long time. We expect them to win their first game by seven points.
