Tip Off Classic recap: Minnetonka vs. Chanhassen

Health played a big part in the Tonka/Chan game losing some luster with Joey Witthus hobbling around with an ankle brace and the Skippers missing frontcourt seniors Evan Altenburg and Eric Liebl.  Tonka went from favorites to heavy favorites with the dangerous Witthus wearing a tie on the bench.

Amar Miller used his blistering pace to score by the Storm five times early in the game and it looked as if Tonka was going to run away with the game.  Between all of the Miller attacks Justin Moes found the touch for three treys.  Chanhassen’s Chad Mapes brought his team back finding space on the blue Tonka arc to hit four first half jumpshots (three behind the arc).  This was coupled with Seth Coatta having an uncharacteristicly bad shooting half so Tonka went into the break up only eight points (37-29).

Little changed in the second half in terms of momentum as Tonka didn’t play their best game but they played well enough to consistently hold a double digit lead.  Cedric Boone came off the bench to provide a scoring spark giving the Skippers three guards in double figures (Moes, Miller, Boone).  Chanhassen didn’t have the guard play to match that consistently. The Storm bigs (and Mapes) were able to keep the game respectable with the Skippers being short on frontcourt players but it wasn’t enough.

To be totally honest the game was somewhat uneventful because a key player was missing, there were many fouls, and Chanhassen wasn’t good enough to get that close, but they were good enough to keep the game in the lower teens.  Tonka won 79-67
