For decades, the northwestern corner of Minnesota has been home to great high school hockey teams. The history behind the programs in small towns such as Roseau, Thief River Falls, Warroad, Crookston and East Grand Forks is rich. It’s continued through lean economic times, an exodus of people to the metropolitan areas and other challenges outside the rink. The locals live and breathe hockey November through March.
When those teams collide, particularly when both have designs on making the state tournament, it makes for compelling watching. That is true this week when Warroad, ranked No. 5 in the Class 1A coaches poll, visits No. 1-1A East Grand Forks this Friday in our top Game of the Week.
