Lack of documentation puts girls basketball scoring record up in the air

For now, Carlie Wagner is the record holder because documentation verifying Rebekah Dahlman’s games has not been submitted.

New Richland-H-E-G's Carlie Wagner is awarded the game ball following her record breaking points scored total during the semifinal game of the Class 2A girls' state basketball tournament Friday night at Williams Arena.

Who is the Minnesota girls’ basketball all-time career scoring leader?

A year ago it was Rebekah Dahlman, who surpassed 5,000 points while playing for Braham in the 2013 Class 2A state tournament. The McDonald’s All-America player was recognized with a game ball at the time by the Minnesota State High School League.

Last Friday it was Carlie Wagner, after a Class 2A state semifinal game in which she scored 41 points for New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva to reach 3,921 points. Wagner “now also owns the state career scoring record,’’ according to the boxscore provided by the MSHSL.

That left state basketball statisticians scratching their heads.

The league reportedly decided to recognize Wagner, a Gophers recruit, as the record holder because documentation verifying Dahlman’s games — she played for six seasons, starting as a seven-grader — had not been submitted. The league deems state records unofficial until statistics backing them up are submitted.

Braham coach Tim Malone said Wednesday that he faxed about 19 pages of game and season statistics to the high school league Monday. He said he had not heard back from the league.

Dahlman, now a freshman at Vanderbilt, finished with 5,060 points. She scored her final 32 points in a championship game loss to Wagner’s team in 2013. Wagner finished with 3,957 points as the Panthers defended their championship with a victory over Kenyon-Wanamingo last Saturday.
